Lament
I believe in art and music that doesn’t escape from our broken and sometimes ugly reality. I’m not going for – certainly not in this piece – “true beauty and harmony” untainted by the shadows of life. There is a risk that art becomes the ”opium of the people” – a pleasant illusion unable to confront the real problem.

The first part of this piece attempts to capture the anxiety, cynicism, anger and grief that many of us can identify with in these strange times. The different voices and fragments creates a rather dark picture of the human condition on planet earth. But perhaps our need to give voice to disharmony can be heard even as a prophetic cry for justice and healing. The deeper message – underneath the chaotic surface – is: “This is how it is, but it is wrong! It shouldn’t be this way!”

The second part starts when one shy and insecure voice/melody emerges out of the chaos. It calls us to look deeper, under the surface, for something like a "collective memory of our restored future". It might sound like a escapism again but it could also be interpreted as an ”echo of a voice” (to use a phrase from N.T. Wright) coming from God Himself. The choir at the end of the piece represents for me what Romans chapter 8 describes as the groans of a creation in labor crying out together with the Spirit for freedom, redemption and the New Creation to be born.
