about

Imagination

We have come to the end of our reflection on the strange year of 2020. We’ve found ourselves thrown into a liminal space between "the now and the not yet”. We’ve tried to capture our feelings of distress and lament. We’ve identified the invitation to silence and attentive listening to (the) Wisdom hidden underneath the chaos of the present. We have started to look for signs of the emergence of a new world post-Corona.

Are we now in a position to start looking forward? Are we allowed to move beyond our much needed focus on cultural criticism and introspection to find a new creative forward-leaning posture? Can we dare to hope and pray for the prophets and visionaries to arise?

According to Brueggemann the prophet engages in ”futuring fantasy”in the face of what he calls the royal consciousness – the discourse of a dominant culture "robbed of the courage and power to think an alternative thought”. For the prophets it’s not enough to (only) critique the culture – it’s about reaching beyond the present and to "keep alive the ministry of imagination” and to propose alternative futures.

I wanted my last piece in the suite ”Imagination” to be forward-leaning in a hopeful way. I used an ostinato to create a forward–movement and to breathe air under the wings of the musical ideas presented. As in all the other pieces I used spontaneous improvisations and unfinished fragments as ”suggestions" for a new work of art. In many ways the feeling is that the music is not yet formalised , finished and closed. I must confess I’m happy to have resisted the temptation to edit and refine the ideas and/so that I'm still ”open for suggestions". Right now it’s enough for me if this music can inspire and open our imaginations to start envisioning new possible futures.
